| | SEPTEMBER 20196CIOReviewMoore's Law states that the number of transistors on a microchip doubles every two years, though the cost of computers is halved. Gordon Moore, the co-founder of Fairchild Semiconductor and former CEO of Intel, gave the law when integrated circuit came into mass production, back in the 1960s. Even today, the law is of some relevance. We still witness the exponential growth in computational speed with each passing year. For example, in every few years, there is a new generation of processor available in the market that has a better clock rate. Additionally, the cost to access the computing device be it a desktop, laptop, or any handheld device has significantly reduced. This shift in better computational power at a lower price, in the first place, has kick-started the blitz of technologies such as AI, ML, VR, IoT and more that are driving the digital transformation for the organizations. Speaking about the big picture, in the semiconductor supply chain channel, it begins with design and terminates at delivery. In between these two ends, there are various processes and treatments involved that finally result in a silicon chip that will have many use cases. With the growing trend of AI, IoT, and big data, the chip can be used in some edge camera device of an autonomous car or inside a mobile phone to support the oncoming 5G wave. Currently, the opportunity to evolve in sync with the disruptive technologies is at the priority for semiconductor solution providers. With the seismic shift, the transformation in the entire semiconductor supply chain channel will result in the better revenue stream, while, also making the whole process of designing, manufacturing, and delivering will become faster and leaner. In a nutshell, the semiconductor industry is at the epicenter of digital transformation, where new technological advancement will play a significant role. These, and more, factors will shape the future of the semiconductor industry using increasingly advanced methods to innovate and bring new products in the market.Do let us know your thoughts.EditorialSemiconductors: At the Epicenter of Digital Transformation Copyright © 2019 ValleyMedia, Inc.
