| | September 20176CIOReviewOil and gas sector is operating in an environment characterized by high degree of volatility and risk. After a prolonged run of high and growing rig counts, mega-capital-expenditure projects, and plentiful capital to support investment, the recent price rebound has increased optimism, and efforts are under way to contain costs by reducing head count, and cutting spending. The executives are considering digital technologies with the potential to transform operations and create additional profits from existing capacity. The worst crude-market crash in a generation propelled energy companies into the digital world. They had already pretty much tested their physical limits with brute strength, ramping up injections of sand to thrash more oil out of subterranean formations and drilling longer horizontal wells. Now they're using DNA sequencing to track crude molecules and mapping buried streams with imaging software. Robots are fitting pipes together and workers are consulting mobile apps for drilling-direction advice. While advanced analytics are being used to transform functions such as procurement and to support better decision making, the latest technologies, such as drones and equipment sensors, are also revolutionizing monitoring and maintenance.By integrating digital applications, companies are able to increase their reservoir limits significantly, resulting in a reduction of upstream and downstream capital expenditures, in addition to ancillary benefits. Some companies have begun using 4-D seismic imaging to add a time-lapse dimension to traditional 3-D imaging, enabling them to measure and predict fluid changes in reservoirs. One thing is sure. In the current market scenario, companies need to reinvent themselves to improve productivity. While capital expenditures or acquisitions might give executives pause, investing in digital technologies is a no-regret move that could increase production from existing operations.
