| | SEPTEMBER 20176CIOReviewKnowledge sits at the peak of today's data-driven businesses, acting as a cradle for benchmark products and services. That said, knowledge management practices have seen an upsurge in the past few years aided by the next wave of digital disruptions that are making it easier to collect, categorize, and share vital information throughout the organization. In other words, knowledge management is making it easier to find the right information, or the people who hold the information an organization needs, to increase the efficiency and productivity. By creating a central repository of data that interweaves all the knowledge into a holistic way--linking users, activities, groups and specific content and documents--knowledge management (KM) reduces the tendency to "reinvent the wheel."KM systems of today seamlessly tap into advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and augmented reality. KM takes advantage of AI tools that provide applications for the selection, analysis and classification of text, visualizations, and automated reasoning for enhanced decision-making. Modern systems using AI are able to handle big data while providing a certain degree of security using new ways of storing data such as the decentralized blockchain data storages. Likewise, the use of augmented reality to assist the process of knowledge management is also gaining momentum. Similar to other KM tools, AR can acquire information from the interaction of workers, organize it in a database, and retrieve that information in both 2D and 3D text, visual, and sound based environments. While all these technologies are playing to level the field, IDC predicts that by 2020, 8090 percent of the data in the enterprise will be unstructured and undiscoverable by traditional hunting and pecking of keywords and indexes. Hence, the next generation of KM practices will be centered around understanding and connecting this unstructured data. With the benefits from KM systems set to leap boundaries, CIOReview is presenting its annual edition on knowledge management. This edition blends insights from industry leaders with a listing of most promising companies in the KM space.
