| | October 20168CIOReviewIt has been two eventful years since Satya Nadella took the reins of Microsoft, the tech giant. The management shift came in at a time when the company was in desperate need to rethink its corporate culture, in the wake of warring, independent product groups, doing things their own way. The solution was to move from 'multiple' Microsoft to 'One Microsoft'--the DNA of the entire company in one direction. The formula, once tried and failed, saw its execution through Nadella. Starting from making Windows, "the universal app platform"--where applications can be 'build once' and 'run anywhere'--the move towards unification today stands at Windows 10. Xbox One, the gaming console from Microsoft and even HoloLens, the holographic goggles, run on this platform today. It also gives the company one platform to work on, and row in the same direction, where it will unite the teams than compete. The "platformization" doesn't end there. The company's cloud competing platform Azure now supports Linux, the open source operating system that developers like. All this was a breakaway from Windows and Office hegemony. It is what lies at the core of Microsoft's "Mobile First, Cloud First" strategy, meeting users on any platform they are, not compulsorily Windows. It is what changed the company's mission to put "A computer on every desk in every home" to "Empower every person and every organization on the planet achieve more."The current Microsoft does feel different after all these years. Nadella has made great inroads in making Microsoft open. The strong ecosystem of partners also had a huge role in making this transition happen. While Redmond-based company's long term strategy still remains unlcear, its complex, yet vivid partner network--from managed services provider to systems integrators, value-added resellers and licensing partners are in for an exciting ride--driven by the growing customer base and a renewed optimism within Microsoft.
