| | JUNE 20176CIOReviewMicrosoft is no longer just a "cloud-first" company. At Microsoft Build 2017, the company's CEO Satya Nadella revealed what they have been working on lately. Microsoft is prepping itself and moving toward the era of "intelligent cloud" and "intelligent edge." It is all about pushing the boundaries of what's possible in the cloud, moving past the days of cloud being used to merely store data, and focusing on "intelligently" processing, analyzing, and manipulating the data to power new services and applications. Azure's Cosmos DB, which was announced at Build, is a prime example of seamless performance being made a reality. This new database features cutting-edge approaches to let developers deploy and replicate data across the globe. If the demand for an application is more in Australia, then Cosmos facilitates the seamless shifting of resources so users in the land down under experience lower latency and higher reliability.Azure IoT Edge, also launched at Build, is the company's take on extending cloud intelligence to edge devices, and a good one at that. While cloud is empowering every device--particularly edge devices--with unprecedented global connectivity, if cloud becomes unavailable or the connection is disrupted, these devices are crippled. With Azure IoT Edge, developers can push code that usually runs in the cloud to edge devices, ensuring the devices continue to function even if cloud experiences downtime. For instance, if the connectivity to a security system that relies on the cloud goes down, it can create a critical security hole. These are the situations where Azure IoT Edge can save the day by enabling the device to continue operating as if an interruption never occurred. Even though this Azure technology is not ready for widespread deployment yet, given its potential and wide-ranging applications, it is an exciting product to look forward to. At this juncture, where the Azure landscape is witnessing futuristic innovation, CIOReview presents its Azure special edition, featuring insights from industry thought leaders and solutions from innovative technology providers. We hope this edition is valuable in helping you optimize your Azure environment.
