| |JULY 20238CIOReviewIN MY OPINIONCLOUD COMPUTING - COST, SECURITY, AND THE TALENT POOLBy Cem Bakota, Director of Cloud Engineering and Automation, Marriott InternationalThe move to the cloud is becoming increasingly popular among organizations of all sizes and industries. Cloud computing offers many benefits, including improved scalability, flexibility, and cost savings. However, the transition to the cloud is not without its challenges. In this editorial, we will discuss some of the challenges organizations face when moving to the cloud and how to overcome some. One of the biggest challenges organizations face when moving to the cloud is security. Cloud-based services and data storage can be vulnerable to cyber-attacks, data breaches, miss configurations and other security threats. Organizations must ensure that their data is protected and that their cloud provider has adequate security measures in place. This includes implementing secure protocols for data transfer and storage such as SSL/TLS, and VPN, encryption of data both in transit and at rest, and regular security audits. Furthermore, organizations must also implement best practices for access management, such as multi-factor authentication, role-based access controls, and regular security training for employees. It's important for organizations to have a clear security policy in place that outlines the security measures that are in place and are being implemented, and to also ensure that employees are aware of their role in maintaining the security of the data.Another challenge organizations face when moving to the cloud is the cost. While cloud computing can be more cost-effective than traditional on-premises solutions in the long run, it can still be expensive initially. Organizations must carefully consider the costs of different cloud providers, as well as the costs of migration and maintenance. Organizations should also consider the costs of bandwidth and other resources when moving to the cloud. Moreover, organizations must also consider the cost of compliance and regulatory requirements when choosing a cloud provider. It's important for organizations to have a clear budget in place and to consider the costs of the move to the cloud in the long term and not just in the short term. Organizations should also consider the potential savings in terms of reduced hardware and maintenance costs.Cem Bakota
