| | DECEMBER 20218CIOReviewIN MY OPINIONEver since big data technologies were commercially available during the early 2010s, there was an explosion of big data adoption in every industry segment due to its benefitsflexibility to accommodate various formats, process and store vast amounts of data at a rapid pace, ability to analyze large datasets, and others. Majority of the big data initiatives started on-premises growing over time, creating challenges with usability, storage, scalability, performance, and increased overheads. As the cloud infrastructure started to emerge and grow, migrations are on the rise with various deployment modelsPublic Cloud, Private Cloud, and Hybrid Cloud. Cloud infrastructure enables unified enterprise data platforms and alleviates challenges with big data, data security, and data governance. Enabling Modern Data ArchitectureData is growing at an enormous pace every moment through various channels, with the need to process and analyze data almost instantly. Traditional warehouse with a linear approach of processing data through the Integration Layer, Dimensional Layer, and Service Layer is no longer enough to support changing business needs.Cloud infrastructure provides compute and storage with dynamic scaling to accommodate faster processing and the ability to analyze data during transport.Cloud made it possible not only to co-exist various types of data formats (structured and unstructured) in the same eco-system but also enabled faster retrieval of data from various storage points with synchronization and zero-latency.Lower Cost and Greater ROITraditional on-premises infrastructure has high upfront setup costs (hardware and software) and ongoing maintenance, backup storage, disaster recovery, and upgrades. High availability configuration requires more storage and compute to keep systems available during patching, upgrades, and maintenance. System provisioning consumes a good bit of the total project time impacting business agility and faster time to market.
