In the past, technology advances have had major impacts on mining practices and the nature of the mine and quarry sites in the United States. Emerging technologies are set to change the way miners operate over the next decade. With advancements in technology--from new software that makes prospecting easier, to advancements in mineral transportation--the industry is at a critical juncture.Several industry objectives will drive future technology change, including lowering production costs, enhancing the productivity of workers and equipment, opening up new reserves and extending the life of existing ore bodies. Technology will also play a critical role as mining companies continue to meet regulatory and stakeholder requirements in areas such as health and safety, environmental impacts, and land use. Progress in technology is already shaping different areas of mine technology, which include surface and underground mining, asset management, strategic production planning, processing, project development and implementation, and technical risk evaluation of investment opportunities.Technical challenges for the mining industry are likely to become more complex, as companies pursue opportunities in new mining territories, while managing costs and responding to environmental imperatives in a carbon constrained world. The large scale surface operations of the past will need to give way to greater use of underground techniques, such as block caving, which uses less energy and creates less disturbance at ground level. New processing techniques may make it possible to extract minerals from the ore, without bringing huge amounts of rock to the surface, again saving energy and reducing the footprint of the mine on the land.Mining increasingly takes place in remote parts of the world, where it's hard to recruit the necessary staff expertise. So tomorrow's mines are likely to rely on remote monitoring and control, with employees running the mines from cities thousands of miles away. Improved technology infrastructure will boost productivity and improve efficiencies across the industry.Mining companies are much larger and more global than before in their push towards geographical and resource diversification and economies of scale, a trend that requires ever more sophisticated information systems and telecommunications technology to sustain. Collecting the large amounts of data their operations produce and then analyzing it effectively presents a technical and human challenge. There are plethora of technology solutions in the marketplace to address the new paradigm of the mining industry. Our editorial team evaluated several of these companies to present you the 20 most promising metals and mining technology solution providers. We believe this information will help you, while you get prepared to develop and implement new processes, technologies and tools to improve future mining processes. We would love to hear your experience of leveraging innovative technology solutions to steer your business.Pradeep ShankarEditor-in-Chiefeditor@cioreview.comEditorialTechnology for Tomorrow's MinesAlex D'souzaLaura PintoRyan FernandesSonia SacharAishwarya KannanIgnatius ArunJoshua ParkerMathew JacobT:510. 565. 7559Stephen Thomasstephen.thomas@cioreview.com Sarah Mathewsarah.mathew@cioreview.com Benny Thomasbenny@cioreview.com
