| | April 20144CIOReviewHaving been in the publishing industry for over two decades, we have not only seen the printing industry evolve but also face a variety of challenges. While we have seen several printing companies go bust, some of the larger printers have made substantial capital investments in new technologies to remain competitive. Successful printing companies need to embrace new technologies that help them to provide affordable, innovative and effective solutions to their clients.Developments like Big Data, BYOD, cloud computing, enterprise mobility and the growing importance of security are seeing digital and paper worlds collide. It is predicted that by 2018 digital printing will equal 50 percent of the global offset sector. Given this context, the printing industry is slowly progressing from the heavy-machinery driven industry to a software-centric business. With the buzz around 3-D printing we are also seeing conventional printing companies making a foray into what is considered as the future of printing.Let's now step into the enterprise. Print-related costs represent a signifi cant proportion of this IT spend, and although some businesses have attempted to identify and reduce these costs, there is still widespread lack of awareness of the magnitude of print-related spending. It is evident that managed print services provide an effective way of reducing the overall cost of print-related activities. By working with a managed print service (MPS) provider, signifi cant cost reductions of 20 to 30 percent can be achieved in the total cost of printing. Managed print services should indeed be a key initiative in any CIO's portfolio. In this printing technology special edition of CIO Review, we present to you both commercial and enterprise print management technology solution providers and highlight what these selected vendors are doing for their clients. We hope the information presented will give you a comprehensive understanding of what technologies are available, which are right for you, and how these solutions will impact your business. We would love to hear your experiences of how technology is playing a critical role in driving your print business.Let us know what you think, Pradeep ShankarEditor-in-Chiefeditor@cioreview.comCopyright © 2014 CIOReview, Inc.
